The purpose of the 'Sledgehammer' is the same as that of all mining tools. The Sledgehammer is the most powerful mining tool, but comes at the expense of some of its damage and speed (measuring at a swing every three seconds, in comparison to the 'Steel Pickaxe' which swings every second.) It may be considered less efficient due to this. It also looks the same as other mining tools.
